5 Simple Tips to Keep Your Wall Mirror Sparkling for Years

A beautiful mirror deserves beautiful care. With the right cleaning routine, your Salkala Decor mirror will maintain its pristine clarity and elegant finish for years to come. Here are our top five care tips.

Tip 1: Use the Right Cleaning Solution

Avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners (like standard window cleaning sprays) on mirrors with decorative frames. Ammonia can damage the protective backing of the mirror and cause “blacking” around the edges over time. Instead, use a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar, 10 parts water) or a purpose-made mirror cleaner.

Tip 2: Always Use a Microfiber Cloth

Paper towels and regular cloths can leave lint and fine scratches on mirror glass. A clean microfiber cloth will give you a streak-free finish every time. Use one cloth dampened with your cleaner, and a second dry cloth to buff to clarity.

Tip 3: Clean the Frame Separately

Our black metal powder-coated frames are durable and easy to maintain. Wipe them down with a slightly damp cloth, then dry immediately to prevent any moisture from sitting in joints or corners. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the powder coat finish.

Tip 4: Watch Out for Humidity

High humidity can cause mirrors to develop black spots around the edges over time (a phenomenon called “desiccation”). If your mirror is in a bathroom, ensure the space is well-ventilated. Run the exhaust fan during and after showers, and consider a dehumidifier in particularly humid climates.

Tip 5: Protect During Moving and Storage

If you ever move your mirror, wrap it in moving blankets or bubble wrap. Never place it face-down on a hard surface. Store vertically, not horizontally. Our mirrors are built to last, but glass is always happiest when treated gently.

Bonus: Removing Stubborn Spots

For hard water spots or stubborn marks, dampen a cloth with undiluted white vinegar and let it sit on the spot for 30 seconds before wiping. For hairspray residue (common in bathrooms), a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth works well.
