Mirror Sizing: Why It Matters More Than You Think
One of the most common decorating mistakes people make is choosing the wrong size mirror. A mirror that’s too small looks lost on a large wall. One that’s too big overwhelms a small space. Getting the size right makes all the difference between a “nice” room and a truly stunning one.
At Salkala Decor, we want every customer to love their mirror in their space. Here’s our complete room-by-room guide to choosing the perfect mirror size.
General Rule: The 2/3 Rule
For mirrors hung above furniture (like a dresser, console table, or sofa), follow the 2/3 rule: your mirror should be approximately 2/3 the width of the furniture below it. This creates visual balance and proportion.
For example, if your console table is 48 inches wide, look for a mirror that’s approximately 32 inches wide.
Entryway Mirrors
Recommended size: 24–36 inches wide, 36–60 inches tall
Entryways benefit from taller mirrors that let you see your full outfit. For narrow entryways, a mirror that’s 20–24 inches wide works well. For larger foyers, go bigger — up to 36 inches wide or more for a dramatic statement.
Living Room Mirrors
Recommended size: 36–60 inches wide
Living rooms can handle larger, statement-making mirrors. If hanging above a sofa (typically 84–96 inches wide), aim for a mirror that’s 56–64 inches wide. For floor-to-ceiling drama, a mirror that’s 60+ inches tall leaning against the wall is stunning.
Bedroom Mirrors
Recommended size: 24–48 inches wide above dresser; full-length (60–72 inches tall) for standalone
Above a dresser, follow the 2/3 rule. For a full-length mirror, you want it to be at least 60 inches tall to see yourself head to toe. Standard full-length mirrors are 14–20 inches wide.
Bathroom Mirrors
Recommended size: Leave 2–4 inches on each side of the vanity
Bathroom mirrors should generally be slightly narrower than your vanity. If your vanity is 48 inches wide, a 40–44 inch mirror is ideal. For double vanities (60–72 inches), you can use one large mirror or two individual mirrors.
Dining Room Mirrors
Recommended size: 36–48 inches wide
In dining rooms, mirrors work best above a buffet or credenza. Follow the 2/3 rule based on the width of your buffet. A taller mirror (36–48 inches tall) creates more visual impact here.
Hallway Mirrors
Recommended size: 20–30 inches wide, as tall as the space allows
Hallways are narrow, so keep your mirror width moderate. But go as tall as your wall allows — a tall, narrow mirror elongates the hallway beautifully.
