How to Choose the Right Mirror Size for Every Room in Your Home

Choosing the wrong size mirror is one of the most common decorating mistakes. Too small, and it looks like an afterthought. Too large, and it can overwhelm the space. Here is your definitive room-by-room guide to mirror sizing.

The Golden Rule of Mirror Sizing

A mirror should be proportional to the furniture or wall space it’s paired with. As a general rule, a mirror above a console table or dresser should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it.

Living Room

For a standard sofa (84 inches wide), aim for a mirror that is 50–70 inches wide. Our 70×30 Arch Window Mirror is ideal for larger living rooms, while the 64×30 works beautifully in medium-sized spaces.

Bedroom

Above a king bed headboard, you want a mirror at least 36 inches wide. For a full-length dressing mirror, go as tall as your ceiling allows — floor-to-ceiling is always dramatic and functional.

Dining Room

Dining room mirrors should be large enough to reflect the table and the people sitting around it. A 48×28 or larger mirror is ideal for most dining rooms.

Entryway and Hallway

In a narrow hallway, a tall and relatively slim mirror maximizes the visual expansion. A 32×20 mirror works for small entryways, while wider hallways can accommodate a 48×28 or larger.

Bathroom

Bathroom mirrors should be slightly narrower than the vanity — about 2–4 inches narrower on each side. This frames the mirror and prevents it from overwhelming the sink area.

How High to Hang Your Mirror

The center of your mirror should be at eye level, typically 57–65 inches from the floor. If the mirror is above furniture, there should be 6–12 inches of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the mirror.
