Mirror Care Guide

Keep your Salkala mirror looking pristine for years with these simple care tips.

🧽

Daily Cleaning

Use a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth for everyday dusting. Avoid paper towels — they can cause micro-scratches on the glass surface.

💧

Glass Cleaning

Spray glass cleaner (or diluted white vinegar) onto the cloth, never directly onto the mirror. Wipe in circular motions and buff dry immediately.

🔧

Frame Care

Wipe metal frames with a slightly damp cloth, then immediately dry. Apply a thin coat of car wax or metal polish every 6 months to maintain the finish.

☀️

Sun Exposure

Avoid placing mirrors in direct, prolonged sunlight. UV rays can cause silver backing to oxidise over time, creating dark spots at the mirror edges.

💧

Humidity

In bathrooms, ensure good ventilation. Water vapour that collects on the frame can cause corrosion. A dehumidifier nearby helps in humid climates.

🚫

What to Avoid

Never use bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads, or acidic solutions. These damage both the glass coating and the metal frame finish.

Dust lightly every 1–2 weeks with a dry microfibre cloth. A thorough glass clean every 2–4 weeks keeps it looking showroom-fresh. Frames benefit from a monthly wipe-down.

Yes, standard glass cleaners like Windex are fine on the glass surface only. Avoid getting any liquid cleaner on the metal frame — it can strip the powder coat finish over time.

This is called "mirror rot" or silvering deterioration, caused by moisture seeping under the glass and oxidising the silver backing. Keep edges dry and ensure the room is well-ventilated to prevent this.

Installation Guide

Follow these steps for a safe, level, and secure installation. If in doubt, we recommend hiring a professional handyman.

1

Gather Your Tools

You'll need: a stud finder, spirit level, pencil, drill, wall plugs suitable for your wall type (drywall, brick, or plaster), and the mounting hardware included with your mirror.

2

Find Your Wall Studs

For drywall, always anchor into studs for heavy mirrors. Use a stud finder to locate them. For brick or concrete walls, use appropriate masonry anchors rated for at least 2× the mirror's weight.

3

Mark Your Hanging Points

Hold the mirror in position (get a helper!) and mark the wall at the hook locations. Use a spirit level to ensure marks are perfectly horizontal. Double-check measurements before drilling.

4

Drill & Install Anchors

Drill pilot holes at your marked points. Insert wall plugs or anchors — hammer gently until flush with the wall. For drywall, toggle bolt anchors provide the most secure hold for heavy mirrors.

5

Drive the Screws

Screw in your hooks or mounting screws, leaving a small gap (about 3–4mm) from the wall surface so the mirror's D-ring hooks can seat properly. Do not overtighten into drywall anchors.

6

Hang & Check Level

Hang the mirror on the screws. Use a spirit level to confirm it's straight — adjust by tapping one hook slightly if needed. Give it a gentle tug to verify it's secure before letting go.

Our mirrors can be hung on drywall (plasterboard), brick, concrete, and plaster walls. Each requires different anchors — drywall anchors or toggle bolts for plasterboard, masonry anchors for brick/concrete. When in doubt, hire a professional.

We recommend two people for mirrors 48" and larger. One person holds the mirror in position while the other marks and drills. For the 32×20 size, a single person can manage with patience.

The D-ring hooks supplied with our mirrors are rated at 15kg each. Our mirrors range from 4kg (32×20) to 11kg (70×30). For additional safety, always anchor into studs or use appropriately rated wall anchors.
